Fast, Simple, and Lossless
Video Editing for Everyone
Avidemux is a powerful, free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering, and encoding tasks. Process 4K, HEVC, and AV1 videos with zero quality loss using our unique “Copy Mode.”
Why Choose Avidemux for Video Editing?
Avidemux focuses on the essentials: speed, precision, and compatibility. It handles what heavy video suites can’t do quickly.
Lossless Cutting
The famous “Copy Mode” allows you to cut unwanted parts or commercials from your videos without re-encoding. This results in instant saving and 100% original quality retention.
Powerful Transcoding
Convert your videos to various formats including MP4, MKV, and AVI. Supports latest codecs like H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for maximum hardware compatibility.
Advanced Filtering
Apply a wide range of filters: resize, deinterlace, color correction, rotate, and subtitle hardcoding. Fine-tune your video output with professional-grade precision.
Master Avidemux in 3 Simple Steps
New to Avidemux? Follow this optimized workflow to achieve lossless video edits without the steep learning curve of professional software.
Import & Analysis
Launch Avidemux and drag your video file (MP4, MKV, AVI, etc.) directly into the main window. The software will automatically analyze the Keyframes (I-frames) and audio streams to ensure hardware-accelerated compatibility.
Configure Output
In the left sidebar, choose your mode. For Lossless Cutting, keep Video/Audio on “Copy”. If you need to resize or add subtitles, select a modern encoder like Mpeg4 AVC (x264) and apply your desired filters.
Define & Export
Use the [A] and [B] markers on the timeline to select the segment you want to keep. Go to File > Save, name your file, and click save. In “Copy” mode, your video will be ready in mere seconds!
Pro Tip for 2026: When cutting, use the Up/Down Arrow keys on your keyboard to jump between Keyframes. This ensures a clean cut every time, avoiding frame corruption or black screens in the final output.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find quick answers to common questions about Avidemux installation, features, and troubleshooting.
Is Avidemux really free to use for commercial projects?
Yes, absolutely. Avidemux is licensed under the GNU GPL (General Public License). This means you can use it for personal, educational, or commercial purposes without any subscription fees or watermarks on your output files.
What is the difference between Stable and Nightly versions?
The Stable version (v2.8.1) is thoroughly tested for daily use. The Nightly version (v2.8.2) contains the latest bug fixes, support for new codecs (like improved AV1/HEVC handling), and experimental features. We recommend the Nightly version if you encounter issues with newer video files.
How can I cut video without re-encoding?
To perform a lossless cut, set both “Video Output” and “Audio Output” to “Copy” in the left sidebar. Select your start (A) and end (B) markers on the timeline, then go to File > Save. The process is near-instant as it bypasses the rendering stage.
Why is my saved video file missing audio?
This usually happens if the “Output Format” (container) does not support the audio codec of the original file. Try changing the Output Format to Mkv Muxer or MP4 Muxer, or change the Audio Output from “Copy” to AAC (lav) to ensure compatibility.
Does Avidemux support macOS Sequoia and Windows 11?
Yes, the latest builds are fully compatible with Windows 11 and macOS Sequoia (including Apple Silicon M1/M2/M3 chips). For Mac users, ensure you download the specific Universal or Qt6 builds for the best performance.
